Mode-S Sensor Maintenance (MSSR)Course 40398


This five-week course teaches the theory of operation, alignment procedures and troubleshooting exercises on the Northrop Grumman Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar System/Mode-S.

Academy resident training on the Mode-S equipment is 40% lecture, 50% laboratory (practical hands-on exercises and demonstrations where applicable), 5% is computer-based instruction (CBI) simulations, and 5% is videotape.

Lecture subjects include system overview, overall block diagram, local terminal applications, interrogator/transmitter, receiver, antenna system and radiation patterns, signal processor, radar and communications interfaces, and built-in test system. Laboratory subjects include operations, maintenance, calibration, and fault diagnostics corresponding to lecture subjects. CBI subjects include background information and simulations. Video subjects include background information.


At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Locate and identify the major sub-assemblies that constitute a dual channel MODE S sensor.
  • Utilize the appropriate control point screens to evaluate the equipment operational status.
  • Perform all required preventative maintenance activities in accordance with published FAA documentation.
  • Analyze system operational parameters using dedicated beacon analytical software packages.
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures to a line replaceable unit (LRU) using appropriate test equipment, documentation, and internal diagnostics.


This course provides training for electronic technicians and engineers responsible for operating, maintaining, and certifying/verifying normal operation of the Mode-S equipment.
