DESCRIPTION

THIS COURSE PROVIDES BASIC RADAR FUNDAMENTALS TRAINING FOR TECHNICIANS AND ENGINEERS WITHIN THE RADAR DISCIPLINE. THE 160 HOUR COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO 110 HOURS OF ACADEMY LECTURE AND 50 HOURS ACADEMY LABORATORY. LECTURE AND LABORATORY SUBJECTS EMBRACE FAA RADAR AND BEACON THEORY, MEASURABLE SYSTEM PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS, AND FUNCTIONAL TROUBLESHOOTING. FUNDAMENTALS ENCOMPASS FREQUENCY GENERATION AND SYNCHRONIZATION, HIGH AND LOW-VOLTAGE TRANSMITTERS, TUBE AND TRANSISTOR RADAR TRANSMITTERS, WAVEGUIDE TRANSMISSION LINES AND COMPONENTS, ANTENNAS, RADAR AND BEACON RECEIVERS, MTI, MTD, AND DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING, DISPLAY AND AUTOMATION SYSTEM INTERFACING, BEACON AND NEXGEN SYSTEMS. THE LABORATORY EXERCISES FOCUS ON THE RADAR TRAINING SYSTEM (RTS), A SMALL LOW-POWER ROOM-SIZED RADAR, TO ILLUSTRATE RADAR THEORY ALONG WITH DEMONSTRATION LABS CONDUCTED AT VARIOUS ACADEMY RADAR SITES. SEVEN (SIX RADAR FUNDAMENTALS) GRADED WRITTEN EXAMS WILL BE ADMINISTERED DURING THE RESIDENT COURSE USING THE CLEAN TESTING FORMAT. THE STUDENT WILL BE PROVIDED WITH, AND CAN ONLY UTILIZE AN APPROVED FORMULA SHEET TO AID DURING EXAMINATION. USE OF NOTES, STUDENT OR LAB BOOKS IS NOT ALLOWED. STUDENTS WILL COMPLETE THE MATHEMATICS REFRESHER (PREREQUISITE) KNOWLEDGE TEST ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS ATTRIBUTING TO 10% OF THE FINAL GRADE. THE LEARNER MUST BE PROFICIENT IN BASIC ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY, AS WELL AS PERFORMING COMPUTATIONS ON THE TI-36X SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR. A TI-36X SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR WILL BE PROVIDED FOR THE DURATION OF THE CLASS. KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS THEORY AND COMPONENTS IS EXPECTED.

This course provides training for electronic technicians and engineers progressing into technical positions having responsibility for operating, maintaining, and certifying/verifying normal operation of Radar Equipment.
